Join us for our SHSK Society Talk in February with Old Girl and author, Claire Harbour.
Disrupt your career!
All of us, whether affected by Covid19 or not, can expect to make big, messy, disruptive changes in our career. The days of 40 years at IBM, then the gold watch and off to the golf course are over, long since, as almost all of you know. The current students at St Helen's would probably not even imagine that sort of career existed, any more than they know what an old telephone with a spiral cord really looked like!
Claire will talk you through the research and stories from her book, 'Disrupt your career', sharing frameworks for career fulfillment and success at every stage. She will show you how important it is to be conscious of your career development, and even explain how companies could be smarter about ensuring that everybody has a great time at work.
In this time when so many of us are stuck at home, maybe on Zoom, possibly wondering if we will ever work again, then following some calm, consistent methods, which work again and again, can be extremely helpful.
About Claire, by Claire
If you were to ask my family members or my close childhood friends, they would almost certainly, down to the last, confirm that I was born a people person! Why? Because I have always been fascinated by what makes each of us tick, and how to get the very best out of everyone. My clumsy, sometimes intrusive childhood questions have grown up into deep, challenging adult explorations, and I will not be done until I have ensured that every human on this planet has the greatest chance of flourishing and being joyful, in both work and life.
My studies of language and culture at Cambridge (post SHSK), plus an MBA adventure at INSEAD, and my work across 4 continents, 17 countries, 8 languages in multiple sectors, functions and roles position me to support a broad range of clients through personal and organizational growth.
People choose to work with me because they find balance and insight in the wisdom that comes with experience and the fresh honesty that is my natural way. I see and express complex things simply, connect ideas, people and opportunities, find deeply creative angles on problems, and say what others do not dare to say.
I spent every single year until I was 21 planning to be a journalist and to write incisive stories from war-zones all over the world. There is a sound reason (and a good story!) as to why that did not happen, but nevertheless, I am a writer at heart, and record my own and others’ ideas in several different contexts.'
‘DISRUPT YOUR CAREER' – how to navigate uncharted career transitions and thrive’ is my first published book, alongside my friend and co-author, Antoine Tirard. According to CEOs and CHROs from companies like L’Oréal, McKinsey and Novartis, as well as thought leaders like Herminia Ibarra and Lynda Gratton, “This book provides invaluable insight, research and strategies for improvement in both talent strategy and career management. The stories are inspiring and authentic, indicating new paths to follow, and innovative approaches to managing career paths for both companies and individuals.”
