Alumnae News |
We are delighted to be celebrating alumna Dr Rachel Buckingham (Fellows) who left St Helen's in 1986. On Tuesday 7 March Rachel performed the first surgery on board the new hospital ship "Global Mercy" in Senegal, West Africa – what a way to see in International Women’s Day!
Rachel is a consultant paediatric orthopaedic surgeon in Oxford, but is currently spending three weeks with the charity Mercy Ships on board their brand new purpose-built hospital ship. By volunteering she is using her skills to change the lives of people around the world for the better and we couldn’t be prouder of her!
The Global Mercy will be docked in Senegal for the next five months and will provide the community there with a chance for surgery that they would otherwise not have, as there are no orthopaedic surgeons in Senegal.
Please read the articles and watch the video below for further information about Rachel and Mercy Ships and the incredible work that the charity does.
